The Lies I Tell

I am not worthy of love.

I am a fake.

I will never be good enough.

These were some of the things I wrote down when we were asked to write down a list of the lies that we believe about ourselves on a daily basis. They were hard to consciously think about and harder still to write down.  How had I developed such a negative view of myself?

In the discussion that followed, a dear friend of mine shared his own list of lies with me.  He had talked to me about most of these before, but hearing them in a list took me by surprise.

It broke my heart.

I love my friend.  I know his heart and intentions and who he is and wants to be.

So it affected me when he read these things about himself because I knew this list for what it was…a bunch of lies.  All of the things he told himself seemed so blatantly untrue that it brought tears to my eyes that he could daily believe these things about himself.

As I was thinking about this, the Lord really spoke to my heart.  He said “Maggie, do you feel how your heart breaks right now?  It’s not nearly as much as how my heart breaks for the lies you tell yourself.

I love you.  I know your heart and intentions and who you are and want to be.  I see this list for what it is…a bunch of lies.

You are not only worthy of love, but there is absolutely nothing that can separate you from my love.  (Romans 8:37-39)

You are not fake, but are being refined to look more like me. (1 Peter 1:7)

You are not only good enough, but my workmanship specially prepared for my purpose.  (Ephesians 2:10)

You are my daughter, a treasure, the apple of my eye and these things you believe about yourself break my heart because they are just. not. true.

We are not the lies that we tell ourselves.  So why are those the things we give power to in our heads?  The truth is that we are new creations and are able (right now, not just when we get our ish together) to live out being a son or daughter of the Lord!

I encourage you to make your own list.  What do you go through your day believing about yourself? Then take that list and replace each one with the Truth that God gives us.

It’s time we stop listening to the lies that we tell ourselves and start living in the abundant inheritance that we have received!
