And I Quote

Most people collect things.  For some it may be shot glasses or magnets or intricately designed doll furniture.  Its a wonderful way to see where you have been and where you want to go.

I collect quotes.  I love flipping through my little notebook and seeing what I was going through and how I was feeling based upon the kind of quotes that resonated with me enough to write down.

I want to share 5 of my favorites with you in the hopes that they make you think, inspire or just make you feel a little less alone.

1.  “That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”

–  F. Scott Fitzgerald

2.  “I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don’t want to get to the end, or to tomorrow, even, and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. I want to eat cold tangerines and sing out loud in the car with the windows open and wear pink shoes and stay up all night laughing and paint my walls the exact color of the sky right now. I want to sleep hard on clean white sheets and throw parties and eat ripe tomatoes and read books so good they make me jump up and down, and I want my everyday to make God belly laugh, glad that he gave life to someone who loves the gift.”

–  Shauna Niequist (Cold Tangerines)

3.  “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

–  Albert Einstein

4.  “There are all sorts of experiences that we can’t put a name to.  The birth of child for one.  Or the death of a parent.  Falling in love.  Words are like nets — we hope they’ll cover what we mean, but we know they can’t possibly hold that much joy, or grief, or wonder.  Finding God is like that too.  If it’s happened to you, you know what it feels like.  But try to describe it to someone else — and language only takes you so far.”

–  Jodi Picoult (Change of Heart)

5. “Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”

–  Kurt Vonnegut
