Todays blog is going to be a simple one. I was challenged by the Lord to take some of the worship songs that I sing and really listen to them, go line by line and ask myself “do I really believe this?”
All to often a worship song begins and we close our eyes and raise our hands and sing words without ever really realizing what they say. We sing love songs to the Lord the same way we belt along to the latest Taylor Swift song
I’ve struggled worshipping lately. It seems so routine and if I know the song really well I can sometimes sing the words while thinking about what I have to do for work in the afternoon.
One morning we were in staff worship and they started singing a song I didn’t know. Instead of singing along as usual I decided to close my eyes and just listen. I listened to the voices around me and listened to the words being sung. That was when the Lord asked me if I believed what they were saying. He asked me to focus on the words, digest their meaning and put them into context of my life.
I took this challenge further by writing the lyrics of other songs that we sing in church and going line by line, considering what they say. I have learned so much about the goodness of the Lord, how much he loves us and what it means to truly worship.
One of my favorite songs right now is called “Pieces” by Amanda Cook. I’ve posted the lyrics below and I challenge you to read (really read and understand) what they are saying. Do you believe it? What do the words mean to you in whatever season of life you’re in?
Unreserved, unrestrained
Your love is wild
Your love is wild for me
It isn’t shy, it’s unashamed
Your love is proud
To be seen with me
You don’t give Your heart in pieces
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us
Uncontrolled, uncontained
Your love is a fire
Burning bright for me
It’s not just a spark
It’s not just a flame
Your love is a light
That all the world will see
All the world will see
You don’t give Your heart in pieces
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us
Your love’s not fractured
It’s not a troubled mind
It isn’t anxious
It’s not the restless kind
Your love’s not passive
It’s never disengaged
It’s always present
It hangs on every word we say
Love keeps its promises
It keep its word
It honors what’s sacred
‘Cause its vows are good
Your love’s not broken
It’s not insecure
Your love’s not selfish
Your love is pure
You don’t give Your heart in pieces
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us
